British Cycling is the national governing body for cycling as recognised by the UCI – the international federation for the sport. British Cycling works across all levels and six disciplines of the sport (BMX, Mountain Bike, Cyclo-Cross, Road, Track and Cycle Speedway), from providing the support and encouragement people need to get riding their bikes for the first time, to being home to the hugely successful Great Britain Cycling Team.

As part of the support to get people into cycling, British Cycling partners with local authorities and community organisations across the country to tackle inequalities and transform lives and communities through cycling. In our local area, British Cycling have a successful partnership with Tower Hamlets Council. This enables the employment of a Community Developer, Ella Burfitt, who works with local communities to deliver cycling and use it as a powerful tool for  social change.

I’m really excited to be working with Bikeworks on this project. Bike ownership is hugely important to enable children and young people to develop their love for the sport and gives them the freedom to practise the skills they learn at our BMX sessions.

Theo and Musa received their new BMX right before their weekly pump track session!

They both started BMX at the British Cycling pump track sessions in Mile End. They showed great enthusiasm and developed their skills to begin coming to the BMX City Academy sessions, where they practise specific BMX race skillsThey attend the BMX City Academy free coached sessions every Thursday 4:30-6pm at Lee Valley VeloPark racetrack. They even both competed at the London Youth Games!

Join the Tower Hamlets BMX sessions!

You can sign up your children aged 7-14 to the BMX sessions in Tower Hamlets by downloading the app SPOND and entering the code PMYQA.

The sessions are Wednesdays 4-5pm at Langdon Park and Fridays 4-5pm at Mile End Park. They can then progress to the City Academy sessions at the VeloPark. Children should be confident cyclists already.
